South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was arrested on Wednesday on charges of insurrection after declaring martial law in December.
The arrest took place at his official residence in Seoul, where Yoon had been staying since his dismissal by the National Assembly on December 14. Following his arrest, he was transferred to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), where he refused to testify, calling the investigation “illegal.”
In a video released after his arrest, Yoon said he decided to appear to avoid “unsightly bloodshed,” arguing that the declaration of martial law was an “act of government” meant to warn the main opposition party about an alleged abuse of legislative power.
The arrest operation Some 3.000 police officers were involved in the raid to secure access to the presidential complex, which was surrounded by Yoon's supporters and opponents.Unlike a previous failed attempt on January 3, this time the Presidential Security Service did not offer active resistance.
Yoon Suk-yeol thus becomes the first South Korean president to be arrested while in office, albeit suspended from his duties. The Constitutional Court is assessing the legality of his dismissal and must decide whether to confirm his definitive removal.
