The president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has responded firmly to the recent statements of the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, who urged the Consell to ask for help if they needed it. In an institutional intervention, Sánchez said: “If they want help, they should ask for it”, a phrase that has not been well received among the ranks of the Popular Party. Mazón, in an appearance that was more than four hours late, has requested the total involvement of the central government in the management of the crisis in the Valencian Community.
Sectoral commissions for comprehensive management
To address the situation in a coordinated manner, Mazón has proposed the creation of five sectoral commissions in which both representatives of the Consell and ministers of the central government would participate. These commissions would be:
- Health Commission: headed by the Minister of Health and the Minister of Health, focused on the care and health management of the emergency.
- Committee on Infrastructure and Agriculture: led by the regional ministers for Infrastructure and Agriculture, together with the minister for Transport, to address the damage and needs of key infrastructure.
- Social Services and Housing Commission: in which the Vice President and Minister of Social Welfare and Housing will participate, together with the Ministers of Social Rights and Housing, with the aim of coordinating care for affected citizens and the reconstruction of homes.
- Employment and Business Commission: chaired by the Minister of Education and the Minister of Industry, requesting the presence of Vice President Yolanda Díaz and the Minister of Economy to support the recovery of the business and labour fabric.
- Home Affairs Committee: the latter focused on security, with the participation of the Minister of Justice and the Minister of the Interior, to coordinate security measures in the affected areas.
Request for military coordination and leadership of CECOPI
In addition to these commissions, Mazón has urged the Government to integrate the Chief of the Defence Staff (Jemad) in the Integrated Operational Coordination Center (CECOPI), in order to optimize the management and coordination of military resources deployed in the region.
This demand for full involvement and the creation of sectoral groups reflects the Generalitat's efforts to coordinate the emergency in a comprehensive manner, involving all administrations and taking advantage of the resources available at all levels of government. Mazón has made it clear that he expects the central government to make an absolute commitment and to provide a rapid and effective response to the magnitude of the crisis that the Valencian Community is going through.
