The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump has announced the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to reduce bureaucracy and optimize public spending, a mission that will be led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. This team is tasked with restructuring federal agencies, eliminating unnecessary regulations and modernizing the administration in line with Trump’s motto: “Save America.”
DOGE: Efficiency and Transparency
According to Trump's statement, the Department of Government Efficiency will focus on creating a “business approach” to governmentWith its peculiar name, DOGE is a nod to the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, which Musk has shown interest in. Trump stressed that the project must be completed by July 4, 2026, marking the United States' Independence Day.
Elon Musk, who has openly supported Trump, said on his social network X that the department will be completely transparent: “Every action will be published on the internet so that the public can monitor it.” Musk has promised to include a ranking of the most inefficient public expenditures, in an exercise in transparency that promises to be “as tragic as it is entertaining.”
A radical approach to government
Ramaswamy, who was Trump's rival in the Republican primaries, also reacted strongly: "We will not do things softly." The businessman has defended a radical approach that could include eliminating entities such as the FBI, seeking a complete overhaul of government structures.
The mission Trump has assigned to Musk and Ramaswamy has been compared by the president-elect to the “Manhattan Project,” suggesting the magnitude of the changes. Although the details are still unclear, DOGE will not be part of conventional government structures, but will instead provide external advice to drive this reform.
Musk's crucial support
Musk's role has been central to Trump's campaign. After a failed assassination attempt on the president-elect in July, Musk stepped up his support, donating millions to his campaign and mobilizing voters in key states. Some analysts see this close relationship as a potential conflict of interest, given the importance of federal contracts for SpaceX and Tesla.
Led by Musk and Ramaswamy, DOGE is seeking to challenge American bureaucracy in what could be a historic transformation of public administration.
